The traditional umbrella is really beautiful! It's like a art. It's hard to make it.

This is a Japanese sweet shop in Kyoto.
It's nice taste to have them with a powdered green tea!

Torokko train continues exciting boat journey going down Hozu River

I took the romantic torokko in Arashiyama used as sightseeing trains which has become very popular in Kyoto.
This is one of the most highlights for visitors in western Kyoto.
Torokko train follows the course of the Hozu River on a narrow-gauge track through the idyllic canyon from Saga to Kameoka, and we can enjoy the beauty of nature in each of the four seasons in the distance 7.3 kilometers for about 25 minutes at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour. All seats are reserved.
Train Ticket price is 600 yen for adult and 300 yen for child.
During the peak seasons, tickets will be sold out before afternoon.

staff will arrange torokko train ticket in advance for guests at http://www.yado-web.com/.
Please ask staff freely.

Many passengers even during off season.
Beautiful scenery different in each season from the train window.

I changed bus at Torokko Kameoka ( Final destination in torokko line )
Ticket for both bus and boat is available at Torokko Saga station.
Price for bus is 300 yen and 3,900 yen for boat.
Bus stop is very closed to the train station.
Bus schedule connect with train schedule. No need to worry for this changing.
Bus ticket.
Boat ticket.
Bus arrives at the office in 20 minutes and we wait for boarding.
During the peak season, we might need to wait for 2 hours for boarding.
They recommend tourists to start in the morning in peak season
(Especially maple and cherry blossom bloom season ).

3 men operate in one boat. 2 men in front of passengers and 1 man in the back side.
They explain the depth of the river, rock shape, birds, monkey, flowers we see.
They are expert and inform us just before we have rapids.

Operator is laughing to look passengers who are screaming at the time of rapids.
and I smile to see him.

10 years needed for professional boat operator.
I was impressed by his hard working.
We might enjoy to see torokko train during cruising.
Colors of torokko train looks really nice with green mountains.
Some passengers waiving their hands to each other between torokko and hozu river.
One boat comes to sell beverage and some snacks.

2 hours journey might make us hungry. We enjoy ourselves to the full at the end of boat tour.
I am on the second line.
3,900 yen is not cheap for 2 hours but we find satisfaction in tours.
No engine, no noise but smells pine forest , fresh air, get away from bustle of a large city.
We have wonderful time by spectacular views, nature and wildlife in this trip.
Maybe we need once or while during our busy life to return nature in mind.
I hope to come back in maple season.

Gion matsuri festival in July in Kyoto

Gion Matsuri, the festival of Yasaka Shrine is one of the most biggest 3 famous festival in Japan. It takes place over the entire month of July. Gion matsuri is known as long history starting around from 970 and how magnificence that 32 floats are elaborately decorated and represent unique themes. As we have many website about Gion matsuri in internet, I would like to write an inside story of Gion matsuri today.

It is about Ochigo-san, the sacred child selecting a local boy to be a divine messenger and sits on top of the main procession's float.

Ochigo-san will work as a divine messenger for almost one month. He might not be able to attend school for some periods, not only a boy but his parents also have tight schedule for festival.
Ochigo-san cannot set foot on the ground, can not eat meals served by women ( by custom women used to be forbidden ) can not eat cucumber because the crest of Yasaka Shrine resembles the cross-section of a cucumber, for some periods. It seems so hard. But to be chosen Ochigo-san is an honorable position. Distinguished parents in Kyoto wish their children to be Ochigo-san if they have boy.

(Ochigo-san in front of picture)

I grew up in Kyoto but I did not know this inside story. For me, Gion matsuri festival is one of good memory I spent with my family or with very closed friends walking in the street to enjoy the sounds, to look massive floats wearing Yukata in festival atmosphere.
To choose Yukata for Gion matsuri is the most enjoyable moment.
Wearing Yukata in Gion matsuri must be cool memory under the summer evening, I am sure!
Yukata is available at rental yukata shop. Accommodation will help.
